V1 See the sweet apple I hold in my hand
Round as a full moon and red as a rose
I am lost in a dream that I don’t understand
I hold blessing and curse in this apple I chose

V2 A flash in the Garden, a snake slithers by
slicing its way through the green blades of grass
a shadow of darkness that catches my eye
the snake leaves no sign of the place it has passed

V3 Where did the snake come from, where did the snake go?
The world looks unchanged yet I’m shattered apart
Are there other secrets I do not yet know?
Is there darkness concealed in the depths of my heart?

V4 The Garden is perfect eternal and whole
but there’s no empty space and there’s nothing to learn
Now I feel something stir in the depths of my soul
the flame of desire beginning to burn

V5 Where there is no darkness, there’s no need for fire
Yet I burn with a hunger that compels me to eat
and only this apple will quench my desire
... is it because it’s forbidden that the fruit is so sweet?

V6 Why did God plant this hunger for truth in my heart
and then show me the path to this tree where I stand?
Perhaps this rebellion was planned from the start
as I hold good and evil in the palm of my hand

If I bite this apple I’ll commit the first crime
I’ll be cast from the Garden if I disobey
to wander in the shadows and darkness of time

V8 Why did God plant this tree in the heart of this wood
Then forbid me to taste of its sweet mystery?
It’s the door to the knowledge of evil and good
and this apple I hold in my hand ... is the key

V9 I’m imprisoned by light if there’s no other choice
If I cannot choose evil - I’m not truly free
I’ll give birth to myself when I find my own voice
